Martelé: Silver of Le Beau Monde: An exhibition of one of the most magnificent silver collections in America on loan from Suzanne and Joel Sugg in a dazzling exhibit including table settings and other displays that bring to life the astonishing life-style of the turn of the century “gilded age.” In 1897 Gorham Manufacturing of Rhode Island began producing hand made silver through a hand hammering process known as "Martele." This silver is widely recognized as the finest ever to be made in America and was first shown at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the International Paris Exposition of 1900 where the silver recieved 5 gold medals. This is an extraordinary collection!

In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent "up there." Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, CAROUSEL was Rodgers & Hammerstein's personal favorite.

The featured guest will be Elizabeth Yarosz-Ash and Richard Ash - Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, TX. Collector's Society events are open to the general public, but joining as an official member is also a lot of fun! The Museum extends an invitation to our membership to join the Collectors Society, an organization made up of people who enjoy gathering several times each year to learn about art and collecting in an entertaining environment. Meetings and lectures are usually held at the Museum and afterwards members of the Collectors Society join the invited speaker for an enjoyable meal in fine area restaurants and in the homes of our gracious members. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet and converse with our distinguished guests on a more informal basis. Dues for membership in the Collectors Society are $100 per person, per year. These dues assist the Museum in purchasing works of art for its permanent collection. There is a fee for the cost of each meal, as well as a $10 program fee that helps defray the speaker's honorarium. The season runs from September to May each year making fall the best time to join. Call the Museum for more info at (325) 653-3333.

Since 2000, Beverly and Ben Stribling have underwritten the "Stribling Art Extravaganza" which has raised over half a million dollars for the West Texas Rehab Center. This years event spans 3 days (and 3 buildings!), and will be held at Fort Concho. Each year the show displays approximately 275 to 300 pieces of original art from a variety of mediums including: oil, watercolor, pottery, mixed media, pastels, sculpture, drawing, fiber, glass, wood, clay and photographs. It is important to note that the participants are serious/legitimate artists and artisans, some more widely known than others. Over half of the works sold each year are $250 or less. As with any good art, pieces can become great investments as the artist gains popularity and acclaim. Many homes, businesses and public spaces in Texas are graced with art purchased at the show. Thanks to the supprt of Jud Gray, there will also be a space designated to young artists wherein local highschool students are invited to display their best works. Come out and support local artists and a great cause. Visit www.striblingart.org for more information.
